Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Established in 1958, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TUTCM) has been striving to build a world top TCM university with Chinese characteristics under the motto of “Strengthening moral education and pursuing academic studies, inheriting and innovating”. In 2017, TUTCM was selected into the building list of China world-class universities and world-class disciplines. In 2020, the university was listed as one of the co-constructed higher educations by Tianjin Municipal Government, Ministry of Education (MOE) and National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NATCM). In 2022, the university was selected into the 2nd batch building list of “Double World-class” universities. It is the only former State Education Commission (Present MOE) approved International University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and also the hosting institution of Educational Instruction Committee, World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS), “Educational Aid Center for Africa and Asia” of MOE, “China-ASEAN Educational Training Center” of Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and MOE, TCM International Cooperation Center of NATCM, and WFCMS “Belt and Road” Chinese Medicine Education Teacher Training Base (Tianjin).

The University has a distinguished teaching staff and sufficient resources for students’ internship. There are six categories in harmonious development, namely as Medicine, Science, Arts, Management, Engineering and Education, with TCM as its main body. There is one “Double World-class” construction program of Chinese Materia Medica, two National Key Programs of Acupuncture & Moxibustion and Tuina and TCM Internal Medicine, 23 NATCM key programs, nine Tianjin “13th Five-year Plan” key programs, two Tianjin first-class programs, three Tianjin top programs, three advanced characteristic discipline clusters and three service industry discipline clusters. TUTCM have three direct affiliated hospitals with a total construction area of 424,000m2 and total beds of 4,120. The First Teaching Hospital is a 3A hospital of China’s first batch, one of the Hundred Better Hospitals of China, National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Moxibustion, National Clinical Research Base of Traditional Chinese Medicine, State TCM Services Export Center, Demonstration Organization for Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Construction and Tianjin TCM Medical Center. The Second Affiliated Hospital is one of the National TCM Heritage and Innovation Institutions and demonstration hospital, Tianjin TCM Medical Center and Regional Medical Center.

The University has extensive international exchanges and cooperation. It aims to cultivate international applied talents in clinic with solid theoretical foundation and excellent clinical skills which make it enjoy a high reputation worldwide. It has formed TCM internationalization talents training system where the bachelor education is the main part. The system also covers master and doctoral education and short and long term certificate studies. As the chair institution of Educational Instruction Committee (EIC), WFCMS, it has formulated the World Standard of Chinese Medicine Undergraduate (Pre-CMD) Education, which has been formally published by WFCMS and it has become the first standard for TCM international education. The university has an International People-to-People Exchange Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine jointly constructed with China Center for International People-to-People Exchange (CCIPE), Ministry of Health (MOH), has been selected into the first batch of State TCM Services Export Centers by Ministry of Commerce (MOC) and NATCM, and the only TCM university in 20+20 Plan for Sino-African Universities by MOE. It has the first TCM Confucius Institute in Thailand, the first TCM Confucius Classroom in the world, Kobe School of Acupuncture & Moxibustion and Tuina in Japan and other overseas institutions. TUTCM has cooperative relationships with more than 40 countries or regions in the world and that with University of Nottingham has been listed as one of the state cooperation by both Britain and China.

TUTCM has two campuses in Jinghai and Nankai district respectively. Taking an area of 1.7 km2 and a construction area of over 0.7 km2, the main campus of TUTCM is located by Tuanbo Lake in Jinghai District, Tianjin, featured by an in-campus lake view, a symbol of TCM plants and a mainstream of TCM culture. It is the largest TCM Botanic Garden and the most advanced TCM science park in China, as well as an influential center for TCM international education around the globe.
